Oxytocin Being Given To Animals In The City’s Dairies, High Court Expressed Surprise

Chandigarh:  On the basis of a survey of 3887 animals present in 227 dairies, a PIL was filed and the High Court was told that most of the animals are being given oxytocin injection to give more milk. Expressing surprise over this, the Punjab-Haryana High Court has considered the matter very serious and has ordered the Punjab government to file a reply to stop cruelty to animals.

While filing the petition, The Piduj People Welfare Society, through advocate Manpreet Singh Bhatti, told the High Court that animals are being subjected to cruelty in nearby dairies. They had conducted a survey of 3887 animals in 227 dairies. In this survey, it was found that in most places, animals are kept in very pitiable conditions. There is a lack of sanitation in the dairies and even clean water is not available for the animals to drink.

In some cases, the animals were tied with a two feet rope and they did not even have proper space to stand. The most worrying thing in the survey was that oxytocin hormone is being administered to the animals to increase milk. Most of the dairy owners administer this hormone themselves and the same syringe is used for this repeatedly. The petitioner said that this hormone is not only harmful for the animals, but the milk milched after administering it can spoil the health of those who consume it.

The petitioner said that when such cases were reported at various places in Mohali, he called the police. The police came and did the formality and did not register an FIR in many cases. No action was taken even after efforts at various levels. The petitioner said that due to the non-compliance of the Animal Cruelty Prevention Act in the city, dairy owners and operators of cow shelters are torturing animals in this manner.
