PGI Developed ABC Device To Compete With Ventilator

Chandigarh: In the Bio Medical Instruments and Device Lab of Chandigarh PGI, the institute’s experts have developed a device that is giving tough competition to ventilators. It has been named Artificial Breathing Capability Device (ABCD). After the completion of the clinical trial of the device and getting the patent.

The institute is now preparing to launch it in the market in collaboration with a private company. Dr. Joseph L. Mathew, in-charge of Bio Medical Instruments and Device Lab and Advanced Pediatric Center, said that this device is very effective. Work on it was started in 2018.

After the success of the clinical trial and patent, it has been given to a private company for manufacturing. It is expected that the device will be available in the market soon. The most special thing about this device is that it will cost 50 to 60 thousand rupees to make it, while a ventilator is purchased for 20 to 25 lakh rupees.

Dr. Mathew said that the device does not meet all the standards of a ventilator, but it includes all the necessary standards so that the life of a critical patient can be saved in an emergency.

After the arrival of this device, in case of lack of ventilator, the employee or the patient’s family will not need to press the ambu bag. Dr. Mathew said that the device has been equipped with an electro-mechanical system, with the help of which the machine can be given commands based on the sensor readings. It can be used for children and adults as well as for people suffering from serious lung diseases and in trauma cases. After setting the pressure, it has been connected to an alarm, so that in case of imbalance, information can be received immediately. Along with this, the alarm will ring even if the patient’s condition is critical.
